As part of our ongoing efforts to promote sustainable waste practices, the Alliance for Sustainability Education (ASEc), on Friday, November 22, 2024 donated 40 waste bins to three schools in the Accra Metropolitan Area under the Plastic Footprint Reduction Project (PFRP). This initiative is a key step in addressing the city’s low plastic recycling rate, which currently stands at just 1%.
The donated bins will help the schools’ separate plastics, organic waste, and general waste, making waste management more effective while creating cleaner and safer learning environments for students.
The introduction of these waste bins is part of ASEc’s goal to build sustainable habits among young people. By equipping schools with the tools to manage waste responsibly, we are helping to create spaces where students can learn, free from the hazards of improper waste disposal.
In addition to providing waste bins, ASEc has established sustainability clubs in the schools to drive environmental activities. These clubs, made up of students trained through the PFRP, are leading efforts such as waste sorting exercises, clean-up campaigns, and recycling drives.
Through these activities, students are learning the value of environmental stewardship and becoming ambassadors of sustainability within their communities. Their efforts not only contribute to cleaner school environments but also inspire others to take action to reduce plastic pollution.
The Plastic Footprint Reduction Project reflects ASEc’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices. By focusing on schools, we aim to inspire young people to adopt environmentally friendly habits that will ripple out to families, neighborhoods, and beyond.
